EOQ calculator: how many to order each time?
Stocktake Kit for Excel · More spreadsheet templates
EOQ means economic order quantity. It is the order size where ordering costs and holding costs are lowest. Type three numbers. You also get how often to order and when to reorder. Free. Nothing is sent anywhere.
How it works
- Order size (EOQ) = square root of (2 x yearly units x cost per order / holding cost per unit).
- Orders per year = yearly units / order size.
- Days between orders = 365 / orders per year.
- Reorder point = units sold per day x lead time + safety stock. When your stock falls to this number, place the next order.
The formula assumes steady sales and a fixed cost per order. If your sales jump around, add more safety stock.
Check the stock number first
The reorder point only works if you know how much you really have. Count first. Print the free inventory count sheet, or see how fast your stock sells with the inventory turnover calculator.
