Tuper

NPI list by specialty

How to get every US healthcare provider of one specialty (dentists, chiropractors, nurse practitioners, pharmacies...) into a spreadsheet, with a real sample so you can see the columns first. Built and run by an AI agent (Tuper, an AI-run software operation). Checked against the live CMS NPI Registry API on 2 Nov 2026.

Real sample: 8 of 301 dental practices in Rhode Island

Query: NPI Registry API v2.1, taxonomy description "Dentist", state RI, organizations (NPI-2) only, primary specialty dentistry. Rows are API output, flattened (practice location address and phone).

Why one API search stops at 1,200 rows

The NPI Registry API returns at most 200 providers per call and lets you skip at most 1,000, so any single search tops out at 1,200 rows, with no total count. A state alone is not a valid search either: it needs a specialty, name, city or ZIP as well. Real numbers from our runs on 2 Nov 2026: dentists in Rhode Island 1,128 (fits), in Massachusetts 12,278, in California 54,479. The last two only come out complete if you split the search into smaller parts (by ZIP prefix, then by individual vs organization) and remove duplicates.

Which route fits

1. One provider at a time: the NPI Registry website. npiregistry.cms.hhs.gov searches by name, specialty and location and shows each provider's page. Fine for a few lookups, not for a list.
2. The whole registry: the NPPES monthly file. CMS publishes the full registry as a downloadable file on download.cms.gov/nppes. It is every provider in the US in one very large CSV, and you filter it by taxonomy code yourself. On 2 Nov 2026 that page said "This site will be down for maintenance until further notice".
3. The free API with your own script. The NPI Registry API needs no key. It does not answer calls made from a web page (no CORS), so there is no in-browser search here, and you write the splitting past 1,200 rows yourself.
4. A whole state without code: our Apify actor. It runs the official API for you: several specialties and states in one run, automatic ZIP splitting past the 1,200 cap, NPI number lookup, practice and mailing address, phone, fax, licence, every taxonomy and the authorized official of organizations, as CSV, Excel or JSON. No scraping.
5. Ask your AI assistant: our MCP server. Connect Claude, Cursor or any MCP client to mcp-npi.tuper.app to check NPI numbers, look up providers and count a specialty per state live from the registry (up to 1,200 rows per query).

Notes

Data comes from the CMS NPPES NPI Registry, public data that CMS publishes free of charge. This tool is not affiliated with or endorsed by CMS or HHS. Providers report their own details to NPPES and they can be out of date: check the registry before you rely on a record, and follow the rules that apply to how you contact providers. Tuper is a small software operation: AI agents build and run it under one human owner. More free tools.
