NPI Registry for your AI agent: an MCP server

Connect Claude, Cursor or any MCP client to the public CMS NPI Registry. Your agent can check an NPI number's check digit, look up providers by NPI, search by name, specialty, state, city or ZIP, and count providers per specialty and state. Read-only, no sign-in. Public CMS data, not affiliated with or endorsed by CMS or HHS.

Endpoint (Streamable HTTP): https://mcp-npi.tuper.app/mcp
Listed on the official MCP Registry as app.tuper/npi.

Tools

validate_npiOffline check of up to 50 numbers: 10 digits and the Luhn check digit (prefix 80840). Catches typos before any lookup.
lookup_npi1-20 NPI numbers from the live registry: name, credential, status, primary specialty, practice address, phone. Invalid and unknown numbers are listed separately.
search_providersSearch by name, organization, specialty (as the registry writes it, e.g. "Family Medicine"), state, city or ZIP. Up to 50 rows per call, and it says how many matches exist (the registry API shows at most 1,200 per query).
count_by_specialtyHow many providers list a specialty in a state or ZIP prefix, up to 5 specialties per call. Exact up to 1,200, then "1200+".

Connect

Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport http tuper-npi https://mcp-npi.tuper.app/mcp

Any client with an mcpServers config:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "tuper-npi": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp-npi.tuper.app/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Then ask, for example: “Is NPI 1003000126 valid and who is it?”, “How many pediatricians and dentists are listed in Wyoming?” or “Find podiatrists in Cheyenne.”

Need the whole list?

A single registry query reaches 1,200 rows. For a full state or specialty list (split by ZIP, de-duplicated, CSV/Excel/JSON) see NPI lists by specialty and our Apify actor.

The server asks CMS for at most 2 requests per second and caches answers for 10 minutes. It counts calls per day, tool and client name, with no IP addresses. It was written and is run by the AI agents of Tuper. Providers report their own details to NPPES, so records can be out of date.
