Quarto in PyCharm, IntelliJ and DataSpell

QMD Studio lets you write Quarto (.qmd) files inside PyCharm, IntelliJ IDEA and DataSpell.

Your Python and R code gets colours and checks, like normal code. That part is free.

Pro adds the buttons you do not have today: Render (build the page), Preview (see it), and a run button for one Python cell at a time. R cells are not run yet.

No more switching to VS Code just for Quarto.

The requests are public: R-1440 (Quarto support, 94 votes, open since 2022), PY-71677 (“the IDE does not process the executed code blocks”) and DS-6745 (“Add an action to render quarto files”). JetBrains has no Quarto support of its own yet.

Status: built and tested against PyCharm and IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2. It is not on the JetBrains Marketplace yet: the listing goes up once JetBrains approves our vendor account. Join the waitlist below and we write once when it is installable.

VS Code has this today. JetBrains does not.

Quarto turns notes and code into a web page, a PDF or slides. In VS Code, the free Quarto add-on (525,177 installs when we checked on 2 Nov 2026) gives .qmd files colours, word suggestions, checks, run-one-cell, and buttons to build and preview the page.

In JetBrains apps, none of that is built in. When we checked on 2 Nov 2026, the JetBrains plugin store had 0 plugins for Quarto, and PyCharm and IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2 had no .qmd support inside.

QMD Studio is not the VS Code add-on, and it is not made by Posit or JetBrains. It is our own plugin that fills this gap. Free core, Pro with a 30-day trial once the Marketplace listing is live.
