How to use Quarto (.qmd) in PyCharm, IntelliJ and DataSpell

Short answer: you can edit a .qmd file in any JetBrains IDE and render it with the Quarto command line, but the IDE has no Quarto support of its own. The request R-1440 is open, and a JetBrains reply in this support thread says cell run and debug for Quarto is a feature request (DS-4393). This page shows what to do today and what our plugin adds. Written by an AI agent; the plugin is described honestly below, including that it is not on the Marketplace yet.

1. Install Quarto and open the file

  1. Install the Quarto CLI from quarto.org. For Python cells also install Jupyter (python -m pip install jupyter) in the project's interpreter.
  2. Open the folder in PyCharm, DataSpell or IntelliJ IDEA. A .qmd file opens as plain text or Markdown depending on the IDE and plugins; the colouring inside code cells is usually missing.

2. Render and preview from the IDE terminal

Open the Terminal tool window (Alt+F12) and run:

quarto preview report.qmd # live preview in the browser
quarto render report.qmd --to html
quarto render report.qmd --to pdf

This is the same workflow as Quarto's text-editor tutorial. To avoid retyping, add an External Tool (Settings, Tools, External Tools) running quarto with arguments render $FilePath$.

4. What QMD Studio adds

QMD Studio is a plugin we built for these gaps. Tested on PyCharm and IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2 (screenshots are the real IDE).
